Surgery Preparation

Following is a list of do's and don'ts that will help you prepare for your surgery. These measures are meant to maximize your safety and comfort. Surgical prepartion instructions are different for each facility. Please be sure to follow the instructions for the facility where your surgery will be held.

Wood County Hospital

Please do the following:

  • Do follow any specific instructions given to you by your surgeon.
  • Do notify your surgeon if you experience any health changes before the day of surgery.
  • Do take medications for heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, thyroid, Parkinson's and seizures on the day of the surgery but with a very small (not more than two ounces) sip of water.
  • Do wear your hearing aid, eyeglasses and dentures, if you have them.
  • Do consult the prescribing physician if you are taking blood thinners or diabetic medication.
  • Do bring inhalers prescribed for breathing treatments.
  • Do brush your teeth; rinse with water but do not swallow.
  • Do bathe or shower the evening before or the morning of surgery.
  • Do wear comfortable clothing.
  • Do bring bi-pap or c-pap machine to the hospital if you have sleep apnea.

Please do NOT do the following:

  • Do not take any herbal supplements for two weeks prior to surgery.
  • Do not drink any alcohol for at least 48 hours prior to surgery.
  • Do not eat or drink anything from 12 a.m. (midnight) prior to surgery or as instructed by your surgeon.
  • Do not chew gum, eat hard candy or smoke after midnight.
  • Do not wear contact lenses on the day of surgery.
  • Do not wear hairpins, barrettes, or any metal objects in you hair.
  • Do not wear any make-up, lotion, perfume, cologne, powder, or hair products on the day of surgery.
  • Do not bring jewelry or wear any body piercings.
  • Do not bring personal belongings or valuables to the hospital.

Pre-Admission Testing (PAT)

The pre-admission testing nurse will instruct you when to arrive, which is usually 1 - 2 hours prior to your scheduled surgery time.

Come in the main entrance, also marked as emergency. Please check in at the registration desk upon arrival. Then take the elevator on your left to the second floor

Please bring the following items:

  • This brochure
  • Your insurance cards
  • Your medications in their original pharmacy bottles; or a list of all medications you currently take and the dosages. Include any herbs or over-the-counter medicines.

Pre-admission testing may include lab work, an EKG, X-rays and other diagnostic testing that may be ordered by your physician. The pre-admission nursing staff will record your medical history and provide additional pre-operative instructions. They will also answer any questions you may have about your surgery.

Certain types of surgical procedures may not require pre-admission testing. In these instances, a nurse will contact you by phone prior to your scheduled surgery date. If you have not been contacted, call 419-436-6762 the day before your surgery.

Please be prompt. If you arrive late, your surgery may be delayed or postponed.

If the start time for your surgery changes, you will be notififed by telephone.

Please do the following:

  • Do bring inhalers prescribed for breathing treatments.
  • Do brush your teeth; rinse with water but do not swallow.
  • Do wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Clothing should allow room for bandages and dressings that may be in place when you are discharged from the hospital.
  • Do bathe or shower the evening before or the morning of surgery.
  • Do arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home if you receive sedationn or anesthesia.
  • Do arrange for a responsible adult to stay with you the first 24 hours after surgery if you receive sedation or anesthesia.

Please do NOT do the following:

  • Do not eat or drink anything from 12 a.m. (midnight) prior to surgery, except medications as instructed.
  • Do not chew gum, eat hard candy or smoke after midnight the night before surgery.
  • Do not wear contact lenses on the day of surgery.
  • Do not bring or wear jewelry or body jewelry piercings.
  • Do not bring personal belongings or valuables.
  • Do not wear any make-up, lotion, perfume, cologne, powder, or hair products on the day of surgery.
