COLONOSCOPY OR LOWER GI ENDOSCOPY
This procedure is an exam of the lower gastroentestinal tract using an endoscope, which is a long, narrow, flexible tube containing a small light and a video camera.  Colonoscopy can help diagnose inflammation of the colon.  It can be used to remove growths (polyps), and to take a sample of tissue (biopsy) to aid in detection of colon or rectal cancer.  While undergoing a colonoscopy you will be under sedation.  It is done in the hospital in the Outpatient Surgery Department.

The preparation for this procedure is very important, if not done according to your doctors instructions the procedure may have to be cancelled or done over.
The day before your colonoscopy you will be required to be on a clear liquid diet all day, no solid foods and no dairy products.  This will be from the time you get up in the morning until the time you go to bed the night before your procedure.  When scheduling the procedure during the initial office consultation appointment you will be given specific instructions regarding the bowel prep process.

If you are on blood thinners, Coumadin, Plavix, or daily Aspirin, this will need to be discontinued for a specific time before your procedure.  Again these instructions will be given to you when the procedure is scheduled.
All other medications can be taken as usual on the day before your procedure.  Do not take anything the morning of your procedure except blood pressure medication-with just a small sip of water.
You will need to have someone to drive you home after the procedure is finished.

CALL YOUR DOCTOR-If you have any of the following after the procedure:
Pain in your abdomen, Fever, Rectal Bleeding

IF YOU ARE SCHEDULING A SCREENING OR ROUTINE COLONOSCOPY-WHICH MEANS YOU ARE HAVING NO COLON RELATED COMPLAINTS-YOU WILL NEED TO CHECK YOUR INSURANCE BENEFITS FOR THIS SPECIFIC PROCEDURE.

UPPER ENDOSCOPY OR EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy)
Like the lower endoscopy, this is an exam of the upper GI tract-esophagus, stomach and duodenum.  EGD can be used to diagnose ulcers, gastritis, growths, causes of bleeding or pain, and cancer.  Foreign objects or growths can be removed, bleeding can be stopped, and strictures can be opened.  You will be under sedation for the procedure.  It is done in the hospital in the Outpatient Surgery Department.

The day before your EGD, you will need to be on a light diet all day, consisting of small light meals, and drinking lots of liquids.  You can have nothing by mouth after midnight the night before your procedure.
